Military Escalation in Aleppo… New Injuries and Forced Displacement
Aleppo faces rapid military escalation as Hayat Tahrir al-Sham–affiliated jihadist groups shell Sheikh Maqsoud, Ashrafieh, and Bani Zaid, causing rising civilian casualties and intensifying forced displacement.
News Center — The ongoing attacks on Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh neighborhoods have caused extensive destruction to infrastructure, including the Osman Hospital, which has gone out of service. This comes alongside the imposition of a curfew and the declaration of the area as a “closed military zone.”
Jihadist groups of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham continue to bombard the neighborhoods of Sheikh Maqsoud, Ashrafieh, and Bani Zaid in Aleppo, resulting in three new civilian injuries, bringing the total number of injured since the start of the escalation to 52 people, in addition to seven fatalities, according to our agency’s correspondent.
Armed factions, including “Al-Hamzat,” “Al-Amshat,” “Sultan Murad Division,” and “Nour al-Din al-Zenki,” backed by the Turkish occupation, persist in targeting the besieged neighborhoods with shells and heavy artillery. This has caused widespread damage to infrastructure, including the direct shelling that rendered Osman Hospital in Ashrafieh neighborhood out of service.
Our correspondent also reported that civilians are being forcibly expelled from both neighborhoods within a few hours. Hayat Tahrir al-Sham has called on civilians to move away from what it considers military sites, announcing the opening of two “humanitarian crossings”: Al-Awarid Crossing and Al-Zohour Street Crossing. The two neighborhoods have been declared a “closed military zone,” with a complete curfew imposed.
The General Council of Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh neighborhoods confirmed that the attacks aim to empty the areas of their residents, describing what is happening as a “special war targeting the will of the people.” It stressed that residents and their forces “will not retreat a single step,” calling on public opinion to recognize the seriousness of the attack.
The Media Center of the Syrian Democratic Forces announced the deployment of more than 80 tanks and heavy military vehicles around Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh neighborhoods, a dangerous indicator of an impending escalation that could lead to a major war involving these factions.
In a statement, the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria condemned “threats by forces affiliated with the Syrian transitional government to target Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh neighborhoods in Aleppo,” confirming that there are no Syrian Democratic Forces present there. The administration stressed that the neighborhoods are densely populated with civilians, including displaced people from Afrin, and that any shelling constitutes a violation of international law and a continuation of policies that fuel conflict and destabilize the region.
The administration pointed to its commitment to the April 1 agreement, while the other party continues the siege, escalation, and rejection of dialogue. It called for dialogue as the only solution, reaffirming its solidarity with civilians and its adherence to a democratic political solution and the building of a unified, decentralized Syria that guarantees rights and dignity for all.
It is worth noting that the siege remains imposed on both neighborhoods from all directions, with food, medicine, and essential supplies prevented from entering, worsening the humanitarian situation and endangering the lives of thousands of civilians.
