Femicide in Algeria: Mother of four killed

A man in Algeria’s Oran province killed his ex-wife following their divorce, Algerian authorities said.

Algiers — Algeria has recorded another killing of a young woman, adding to the rising number of violent crimes against women in the country.

In the district of Ain El Turk, located about fifteen kilometers from Oran in the north-west of Algeria, people woke up on Wednesday to reports saying that one woman, mother of four, was killed by her ex-husband. An investigation has been reportedly launched into the incident.

According to figures released by women’s rights groups, the cases of femicide in Algeria have risen in recent years. According to a feminist organization, at least 315 women have been killed since 2019: 74 in 2019, 56 in 2020, 57 in 2021, 41 in 2022, 39 in 2023, and 48 in 2024.
