Suicide of a Detainee Inside Sana’a Central Prison Controlled by the Houthis.
In a recent incident highlighting widespread violations in Houthi-run prisons, detainee Ghadir Al-Barkani ended her life by hanging in the central prison courtyard, adding to ongoing abuses against female inmates.

The Women for Peace coaition in Yemen and the Protection of Abused and Survivor Women from Houthi Prison association announced on Tuesday, Januray 13,in a Joint statement, that detainee Ghadir Al-Barkani was found hanging in the courtyard of the central prisonunder Houthi control in the capital, Sana’a.
The statement explained that Ghadir Al-Barkani ended her life in front of prison security personnel, who did not intervene to save her, resulting in her death. The statement described this situation as gross negligence, holding the prison administration fully responsible for the incident.
The statement drew attention to a previous incident on December 10, 2025, when detainee Fatima Margham committed suicide by strangulation, which caused a fracture in her trachea. The statement emphasized that this documented case reflects the psychological pressure, torture, and ill-treatment faced by detained women.
The statement confirmed that the recurrence of these incidents within a short period reflects a serious reality of a deadly detention environment, revealing a complete absence of basic protection, health, and psychological care standards inside the prisons. It emphasized that the Houthis bear full responsibility for the lives and safety of the female detainees.
The joint statement held the Houthis fully responsible, both legally and morally, for the deaths of detainees Ghadir Al-Barkani and Fatima Margham. It called for an urgent and independent investigation into all suicide cases and violations inside the prisons, alongside the immediate and unconditional release of women arbitrarily detained.
In conclusion, the “Women for Peace” coalition in Yemen and the “Protection of Abused and Survivor Women from Houthi Prisons” association urged granting human rights and humanitarian organizations unrestricted access to detention facilities, ensuring accountability of those responsible for these crimes before international justice.
