Amed- In the morning (March 16), police raided many houses in Amed (Diyarbakır) as part of an investigation launched by the Diyarbakır Chief Public Prosecutor's Office in 2021. 24 women have been detained.

The names of women, who have been detained, are as follows:

Adalet Kaya, president of the Rosa Women’s Association, Nevin Oyman, the board member of the Rosa Women’s Association, Fatma Gültekin, a member of the Rosa Women’s Association, Zekiye Güler, an activist of the Free Women’s Movement (TJA), Remziye Sızıcı, Co-chair of the HDP's Yenişehir district, Filiz Buluttekin, former co-mayor of Sur Municipality, Fatma Yıldızhan, the secretary of Health and Social Service Workers' Union (SES) in Diyarbakır, Nihal Yanık, Co-chair of the Union of All Municipality Civil Servants TÜMBEL-SEN), Hatice Efe, Education Secretary of the No.1 Branch of the EĞİTİM-SEN (Teachers’ union), Bahar Uluğ,  the women’s secretary of the United Trade Union of Transport Employees (BTS), Sakine Karadeniz, Birsen Güneş, Hazal Yıldırım, Safiye Akdağ, Esma Efetürk, Yıldız Kardaş, Gülşen Özer, Evin Yelboğa, Yenişehir Municipality Council member Emine Kaya, and Jale Okkan, an activist of the TJA.

The detained women have been reportedly held in Diyarbakır Police Headquarters. The lawyers of the women have been banned from seeing their clients.

Statement from KESK

Women’s Platform of the Confederation of Public Employees' Unions (KESK) held a press conference and demanded the release of women. Zeynep Erkan Korkmaz, the secretary of the KESK’s Department of Foreign Affairs, said that every activity of women is banned and that oppression and intimidation operations are continued by the judiciary.

“This morning, at least 24 women, including our unions’ members, were detained. Although no information has been given to us about the reason for the detentions, we think the women have been detained for their activities on International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and International Women’s Day. All detained women in Diyarbakır should be released immediately and an investigation should be launched against those who carried out this unlawful practice,” the statement released by the KESK says.
