News Center- On March 6, the Libyan government decided to temporarily suspend the memorandum of understanding with the United Nations on the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) after a meeting of the Council of Ministers in Tripoli. The Government Information Office announced the decision on Facebook.

“The Libyan state had reservations in advance on some provisions of the memorandum that contradict the provisions of Islamic Sharia,” the office wrote.

The Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) is an international legal instrument that requires countries to eliminate discrimination against women and girls in all areas and promotes women’s and girls’ equal rights.
