Tunisia- In an era that has witnessed profound cultural changes, Tunisian tattoo artist Manel Mahdouani tries to revive the art of Amazigh (Berber) tattoos that has slowly faded from the memories of the new generation.

Manel Mahdouani is an internationally renowned female Tunisian tattoo artist specializing in Amazigh (Berber) tattoos in Tunis, Tunisia.

‘Tattoos define cultural identity’

Manel Mahdouani thinks that tattoos define cultural identity. “Traditional Amazigh tattoos had long been considered unfashionable among young people. Therefore, I decided to revive Amazigh designs, turning them into a modern art form that Tunisians and even non-Tunisians would embrace.”

Manel Mahdouani believes that Amazigh tattoos should return to their deserved place in Tunisian history and culture. “I have researched Amazigh tattoos to learn more about them. My interest in Amazigh tattoos was not simply the choice of a new branch of art, but rather the beginning of a long journey of Amazigh designs and ancient history.”

‘I feel like I am writing a history while tattooing’

Manel Mahdouani talked about the importance of Amazigh tattoos, “They are a tool documenting the culture and history of the Amazigh community. Amazigh designs show the identity of Amazigh tribes, the history of Amazigh people. For instance, when you look at the tattoos on women’s bodies, you can understand whether they are married or single, whether they have children or not. Therefore, I feel like I am writing a history while tattooing.”

She works to understand the meaning of the designs

Manel Mahdouani has made contact with old Amazigh women having tattoos on their hands, necks and chests. “Thanks to them, I have learned more about this art and the meaning of designs.”

Amazigh tattoos have become popular among young people in Tunisia. “I am proud of myself for promoting this art as a part of our culture and identity,” said Manel Mahdouani. “Amazigh tattoos are a way of documenting Amazigh culture and heritage. We should understand and know our cultural values. I believe that Amazigh tattoos are also part of our cultural values.”
