Aleppo – Since humans first set foot on Earth, they have felt an inner power they initially did not know how to translate into reality. They began observing their surroundings, listening to sounds and attempting to imitate them, and seeing objects while trying to recreate them.

Yet, humans often felt powerless until, over time and with the development of the human mind, they learned to translate this inner strength into tangible forms—producing harmonious sounds that became music, capturing nature in vivid colors that became painting, and shaping myths into sculptures through the art of carving.

Afrin’s Beauty Reflected in Her Paintings

In the city of Afrin in northern and eastern Syria, the beauty of nature deeply influenced sensitive and contemplative young women, including artist Safaa Sheikho, whose works reflect the landscapes of her hometown.

Although she initially did not study art and followed her family’s wish to attend the Faculty of Agriculture, graduating in 2010, her dream persisted. She later honed her talent at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Painting, at the University of Aleppo, graduating in 2014. Safaa Sheikho thus never abandoned her passion for painting.

To further develop her skills, she joined the Jamil Horo Center for Culture and Art in the Al-Ashrafieh neighborhood of Aleppo. There, she teaches children painting techniques and color coordination. She adopted a novel approach, focusing on nurturing talent so that children can express themselves in their own ways. She acts as a mentor, overseeing their progress and providing guidance at the right moments.

Safaa believes that to bring art to the widest segment of society, “we must start with children from an early age, helping them discover and refine their talents through play and education. This is difficult and requires great effort. Teaching young adults is easier because their talents are more mature and their ability to express themselves is greater.”

Achieving this goal requires more cultural and artistic centers to host and nurture young talents, ensuring they grow to become painters, musicians, and sculptors of international caliber.

Addressing Social Issues Through Art

Sheikho chooses her subjects from her natural and social environment, often addressing social issues such as women’s rights and violence against women. She prefers oil paints because, in her view, they give the painting clarity, meaning, and life.

Like any dedicated artist, she seeks to improve her talent and share her artistic experience with the largest possible audience. She also strives to develop her work with children and young adults so they can become talented painters and artists who produce exquisite, high-quality artworks.

Safaa Sheikho calls for support—both moral and financial—for children and young people with genuine talent. She encourages women and girls with artistic abilities to nurture their skills and strive for excellence, even in societies that may not accept women freely expressing their inner selves.
