UN: Nine Million internally Displaced in Sudan After Three Years of Conflict
Sudan faces the world’s largest displacement crisis: 4.5 million refugees abroad, 9 million internally displaced, and 4.5 million returnees after security improved.
News Center_Sudan is witneesing an unprecedented worsening of its humanitarian criese, with the deterioration of basic services and the expansion of urgent needs among the population, amid growing challenges facing relief organizations in reaching those affected_making the humanitarian situation more complex by the day.
The United Nations stated yesterday, Sunday, June 20, that Sudan remains the world’s largest displacement crisis, noting the presence of at least 4.5 million Sudanese who have sought refuge in other countries.
UNHCR Representative Marie_ Hélène reported that three years after the outbreak of conflict, there are still approximately 9 million internally displaced Sudanese within the country.
She pointed out that the Sudanese army’s recapture of Khartoum, Al-Jazirah, and Sennar states, and the subsequent cessation of combat operations in these areas, have directly contributed to the return of approximately 4.5 million displaced persons to their original areas. She added that estimated indicate 1.8 million of those returnees headed to Khartoum State alone_an indicator of the scale of relative improvement in the security situation there.
Since the outbreak of conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces in mid-April 2023, Sudan has been living through one of its most severe crises. The conflict has resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands and the displacement of millions of people within and outside the country, according to international organizations' estimates. This massive displacement reflects the profound humanitarian impact of the conflict, as well as the significant challenges facing relief efforts and the restoration of stability.
