KJAR Calls for Internationalizing the Case of Zeynab Jalalian

The Free Women’s Community of Eastern Kurdistan (KJAR) said German parliamentarian Cansu Özdemir taking up the case of Zeynab Jalalian marks an important step toward internationalizing her struggle in Iran.

News Center — In response to statements by Cansu Özdemir regarding her support for Zeynab Jalalian, the Free Women’s Community of Eastern Kurdistan (KJAR) said the position represents a political and moral responsibility, calling for the political prisoner’s case to be internationalized to end her nearly two decades of suffering.

KJAR sent an official message on Saturday, March 14, to the German federal parliament member Cansu Özdemir, expressing appreciation for her stance and stressing that her support reflects a political and ethical responsibility toward women striving for freedom.

In its message, KJAR stated that Özdemir’s announcement of her commitment to defending Zeynab Jalalian reflects an important humanitarian and political position, emphasizing that this support should develop into international pressure to end the suffering of the political prisoner serving a life sentence in Iran.

The organization explained that Jalalian is considered the first political prisoner in Iran sentenced to life imprisonment until death, a ruling it said violates basic human rights and has been accompanied by years of torture and denial of medical care.

KJAR cited excerpts from Jalalian’s own letters describing harsh prison conditions, including skin, psychological, and neurological illnesses caused by isolation, poor nutrition, and lack of medical treatment.

According to the organization, Jalalian’s endurance during twenty years in Iranian prisons has made her a symbol of women’s struggle. KJAR said her ability to turn the silence of prison cells into “a poem of freedom” has deeply unsettled Iranian authorities.

The group added that it is necessary for everyone to become the voice of Zeynab Jalalian, stressing that Özdemir’s message reflects responsibility toward all women seeking freedom and that, as a political actor, she can help elevate the case to the international level.

Earlier, Cansu Özdemir, a member of The Left Party (Germany), announced in a social media post on Friday, March 13, that she would provide all forms of political and international support to Zeynab Jalalian, describing her case as a clear example of the repression of political activists and ethnic minorities in Iran.

She also referred to the continued parliamentary program supporting human rights defenders within the German parliament, stating that she would serve as Jalalian’s “political sponsor” and work to ensure international follow-up of the case, based on the principle that human rights are non-negotiable.
