Universities in NE Syria take on mission to build democratic society

Qamishlo- The universities founded in North and East Syria following the revolution in Rojava have taken a mission to build a democratic society based on science.

Since the revolution, many alternative universities have been founded in North and East Syria; Rojava University was founded in the city of Qamishlo in 2016, Kobanî University was founded in 2017, and Al-Sharq University was founded in the city of Raqqa in 2021.

‘The aim is to provide transparency in education and accessibility of information’

In an interview with NuJINHA, Gian Sayed Silo, Co-chair of the Institute of Social Sciences at the University of Rojava, drew attention to the importance of alternative universities in society, stressing that their aim “is to save people from colonialism” and to provide “transparency in education” and accessibility of information.

Building a democratic society

She also talked about the current education system in Syria. “The Baathist regime had exploited society for 50 years. Our universities have made great efforts to build a democratic society. The universities have their own curriculum and aim to promote the scientific revolution in society. The universities in North and East Syria have taken on a mission to build a democratic society based on science.”
