Mothers and Leaders from Shingal: Integration Is the Fruit of Our Sacrifices and Our Goal Is Coexistence

Shingal women widely welcomed the units' integration into Iraq's security system, calling it a foundational step to protect Yazidis and the fruit of great struggle and sacrifices.

SHINGAL – In a strategic step toward enhancing stability and partnership in national decision-making, the official announcement was made in Shingal of the start of the integration process and the official joining of the Shingal Resistance Units (YBŞ) and the Shingal Women's Units (YJŞ) within the Iraqi federal security system, crowning a path of negotiations and continuous consultations between Baghdad and Shingal since the beginning of 2026.

The announcement ceremony, held yesterday, Monday, 26 October, witnessed an expanded press conference and a notable official and popular presence, including the Governor of Nineveh and a number of federal government officials, alongside the leaders of the male and female fighters of the units, representatives of society and the Yazidi Alliance, and the families and mothers of the martyrs.

During the event, two separate statements were read: the first issued by the leadership of the units, and the second by the media office of the Iraqi Prime Minister.

The joint statement issued by the leadership of the Shingal Resistance Units stated that the agreement stipulates the enrollment of 4,165 male and female fighters from the units into the federal security structure, stressing that the success of this step and the continuation of its implementation are closely linked to commitment to basic conditions: protecting the legal rights of the fighters, preserving the dignity and sacrifices of the martyrs, and ensuring sustainable security for Shingal while consolidating the rights and identity of the region's residents in full.

Adherence to Will and Coexistence

In the context of the coverage, the women's events participating in the ceremony confirmed the historical and political dimensions of this transformation. Khokha, the mother of one of the female martyrs, described the announcement as "a first and foundational step for a long-term process that requires a continuous negotiating spirit to ensure the protection of the people and the securing of all their gains."

For her part, leader Viyan Hababi explained the features of the new positioning of the women's units in Shingal, noting that part of the (YJŞ) fighters will join directly the official security forces, while the other part will undertake complementary tasks, with the endeavor to ensure the activation of the role of all female fighters in a way that preserves the specificity of the Yazidi community and protects women.

The participants considered that this agreement represents the fruit of a bitter struggle and sacrifices made by the Yazidi community to confront historical genocides and massacres, confirming that the primary goal is to entrench the values of coexistence and peace with all Iraqi components.

For her part, leader Jinda Shankali stressed the essence of the partnership with Baghdad, saying: "We participated in these ceremonies to confirm our desire to be a recognized part, by our free will, within the Iraqi defense system, while declaring at the same time our rejection of any decisions that do not serve the supreme interest of our people. We hope that this step will be a good omen and permanent stability for the whole of Iraq."
