Medical convoy in Egypt to raise awareness of FGM
An Egyptian women’s organization has launched a medical convoy to raise awareness of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) to mark the Egypt's National Day for the Elimination of FGM.
Cairo - Every year the 14 of June marks Egypt's National Day for the Elimination of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). The Tadwein Center for Gender Studies has launched a medical convoy to raise awareness of FGM by giving information about the risks of FGM to families in Qalyubia.
Dr. Randa Fakhreddin, a consultant on mental and reproductive health at the Tadwein Center for Gender Studies, spoke to NuJINHA about the aim of the convoy. Stating that the center has launched the medical convoy to mark the Egypt's National Day for the Elimination of FGM and educate the citizens about the risks and impact of FGM, Randa Fakhreddin said, “The convoy also provides many medical services, including the detection of blood pressure, diabetes and conjunctivitis. This convoy is not the first of its kind in Qalyubia governorate. We spoke to many women about risks and impact of the FGM. We have held many awareness-raising meetings across Egypt.”
“FGM is a method of torture against girls and women”
Stating that the FGM is a method of torture committed against girls and women, she said, “The impact of FGM appears after this practice. Everyone, mothers, fathers and doctors will face prison sentence if they carry out FGM or help it to take place.”
