Fourth Women’s Media Union Conference launched in Northeast Syria region

Fourth Women’s Media Union Conference began in Qamishlo, Northeast Syria, after a four-year delay due to security and political challenges, with over 150 delegates from across the region participating.

Qamishlo – The fourth conference of the Women’s Media Union aims to evaluate the experience of women’s media, review the union’s internal regulations, and develop a strategic plan to keep pace with political and media developments in the region.

After a four-year delay due to security and political challenges, the conference began today, Saturday, November 8. Women’s media in the region face multiple challenges, making the conference a key opportunity for reviewing past efforts and planning the future of women’s media.

The conference hosts a wide and diverse attendance of journalists and activists, with over 150 delegates from across Northeast Syria participating. They represent a broad spectrum of women’s media institutions, civil centers, independent journalists, and women’s rights activists. This participation reflects the union’s growth since its inception, now including over 500 women journalists, highlighting its expanding role in supporting women’s issues and enhancing female presence in the media landscape within a pluralistic environment.

The program includes speeches by Arin Sweid, spokesperson for the Women’s Media Union, and Ilham Ahmed, co-chair of the Foreign Relations Committee in the Autonomous Administration and the Star Conference. Discussions will follow on the conference’s main objectives, including reviewing the status of women’s media over the past four years and outlining a strategic plan to keep pace with media and political developments in the region.

The fourth conference is particularly significant as it follows a four-year postponement due to the region’s security and political conditions. This period posed challenges that affected the union’s organizational capacity, making this conference a pivotal moment to reassess and reorganize priorities since the third conference in 2020, which marked the union’s establishment as an umbrella organization for women’s media institutions in Northeast Syria. The region’s political and security changes significantly impacted media work, and the conference serves as a crucial platform to evaluate past achievements and plan for sustainable women’s media work in the future.

Preparatory Committees and Comprehensive Review

Under the supervision of specialized preparatory committees, a detailed report documenting the Women’s Media Union’s journey over past years has been prepared. It includes major media activities, training programs, workshops, and coverage carried out by women’s institutions across various fields. The conference is expected to conduct a comprehensive review of the union’s internal regulations, aiming to align them with current challenges and enhance its effectiveness in supporting and developing women’s media
