Almost 14,000 pregnant women affected by conflict in Lebanon

Almost 14,000 pregnant women have been affected by the conflict in Lebanon, according to a report published by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) on Wednesday.

News Center- The ongoing conflict between Israel and the Hezbollah militia in Lebanon has affected 1.2 million people. Out of 1.2 million people, over 336,000 are women of reproductive age struggling to access essential sexual and reproductive health services, including maternal care, menstrual supplies, and contraception.

13,900 pregnant women are among the affected people, according to a report published by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) on Wednesday. “1,550 expected to give birth in the next month,” the report said. “Protection risks, including sexual exploitation and abuse, have intensified in overcrowded shelters, where access to support services remains limited.

An estimated 520,000 women and girls were displaced and in desperate need of shelter and safety, UN Women said in a statement in October 2024.

Lebanon’s food insecurity is set to worsen if hostilities persist in the Bekaa and the South, which account for more than 60 per cent of Lebanon’s agricultural production, the report of the OCHA added.

According to the UN International Organization for Migration (IOM), conflict in Lebanon has displaced some 880,000 people within the country. Another 470,000 have fled across the border into neighboring Syria.

Since October 8, 2023, at least 3,365 people have been killed and 14,344 others injured in Israeli attacks on Lebanon, the Lebanese health ministry said on Wednesday.
