Algeria marked the International Day of Rural Women, observed annually on October 15, with a series of national and local events honoring the vital contributions of rural women to sustainable development, local economies, and the preservation.

Like many countries around the world, Algeria celebrated this occasion by focusing on the central role of rural women in achieving sustainable development. The event aimed to showcase their active involvement in strengthening food security, safeguarding natural resources, and supporting local economies — positioning them as a cornerstone of resilient and prosperous communities.

National and Local Activities
Across the country, a range of cultural, educational, and economic events were organized to honor rural women.
In Saïda Province, the “Mustapha Khalaf” Cultural Center hosted a gathering on October 15, bringing together women’s associations and representatives from agricultural and social solidarity sectors. The event featured displays of products made by rural women from local cooperatives, including traditional crafts, farming goods, and beekeeping products.

In Bouira Province, awareness days were held to promote women’s entrepreneurship in rural areas. These included workshops on digital marketing and micro-project financing, helping rural women develop essential business skills and access economic opportunities.

Government Support and Economic Empowerment
The Ministry of National Solidarity, Family, and Women’s Affairs emphasized in a statement that the celebration aligns with Algeria’s broader national efforts to strengthen women’s participation in local economies. The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to advancing economic empowerment programs, facilitating women’s access to vocational training, financial services, and social protection.

The Algerian Chamber of Fisheries and Aquaculture also took part in the celebration, highlighting the growing presence of women in fish farming and seafood production, especially in coastal regions such as Jijel and Tipaza. In southern provinces, exhibitions showcased local women’s products, including dates and natural derivatives, as part of initiatives encouraging women’s entrepreneurship and rural innovation.

Rural Women: Pillars of Development
Through these initiatives, Algeria reaffirmed its dedication to empowering rural women and integrating them into the nation’s sustainable development path. As key actors in combating climate change and strengthening national food security, rural women stand as silent yet powerful contributors to local resilience.

The International Day of Rural Women remains a yearly reminder to recognize and celebrate the daily efforts of women who, often away from the spotlight, build stronger, more sustainable communities for all.
