‘Awareness should be raised against economic violence’

Women, who participate in the labor force in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq despite all the obstacles, say that awareness-raising activities should be carried out to end economic violence.

Sulaymaniyah-Preventing women from attending employment and educational activities or sabotaging items needed to fulfil such activities are some forms of economic violence. More women participate in the labor force to struggle against economic violence. NuJINHA spoke to some women participating in the labor force in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.

 Fenk Celal, a member of the Union of Weavers and Tailors, has worked as an artisan in Sulaymaniyah for 10 years. Calling on all women to pursue their dreams, she said, “They should not allow any obstacles stop them from realizing their dreams. They should participate in the labor force.”

In her speech, she also emphasized that women are ignored and subjected to violence in all facets of life. “Therefore, it is very important for women to have an independent economy. Women should make great efforts to have their economic independence.”

‘Men prevent women from participating in the labor force’

Kowestan Aziz, an entrepreneur in Sulaymaniyah also called on all women to start their own business despite all the obstacles. She emphasized that men did everything to prevent women from participating in the labor force. “Women, who participate in the labor force, face many barriers. This is also a form of violence against women. Men do not want women to participate in the labor force because they want to control women. Awareness-raising activities should be carried out to end economic violence against women. “
