Portrait of the day: Berfo Kırbayır
‘I left my door open so that my child could come in. Days, months, and years passed but my child didn’t come…’
Berfo Kırbayır is one of the symbols of the Saturday Mothers in Turkey. Mother Berfo spent her 32 years looking for her son Cemil Kırbayır. She sat down at Galatasaray Square of İstanbul along with Saturday Mothers for years to find her son’s bones. But her life was not enough to find her son’s bones. She died at 106 on February 23, 2013. On February 6, 2011, Mother Berfo had met with President Tayip Erdoğan (He was Prime Minister that time) at the Prime Minister's Office in Dolmabahçe, hoping that she would find Cemil’s bones. Erdoğan had claimed that they would make an effort to find the perpetrators of Cemil Kırbayır. However, Erdoğan did not keep his promise to Mother Berfo.
