Widespread Solidarity with Yemeni Activist Laila Al-Maqtari and Calls for Accountability

What activist Laila Al-Maqtari was subjected to has sparked a wave of solidarity and demands for investigation and accountability, as human rights reports continue to document multiple violations affecting women in various parts of the country.

News Center — Rights and popular calls are escalating in Yemen to enhance the protection of women within security institutions, following activist Laila Al-Maqtari's revelation that she was subjected to harassment inside a police station in Al-Hodeidah Governorate.

The testimony of Yemeni activist Laila Al-Maqtari regarding her exposure to harassment inside a police station in Al-Hodeidah Governorate has sparked a wide wave of popular and rights-based engagement, amid demands for a transparent investigation and accountability for those responsible for any violations against women within security institutions .

Al-Maqtari's statement came amid ongoing debate about the conditions of women in Yemen and the risks and violations they face under the complex security and political circumstances the country has experienced for years .

The case generated widespread interaction on social media platforms, where activists called for the necessity of conducting an urgent and independent investigation into violations that women may face inside police stations and detention centers .

A number of commentators considered that the case does not concern the activist alone but is linked to the safety and rights of Yemeni women in general, calling for complaints related to violations not to be ignored and for any individuals proven to be involved to be held accountable .

This incident comes amid human rights reports speaking of escalating violations affecting women in Yemen over the past years. The "Yemeni Network for Rights and Freedoms" had announced in a recent report the documentation of more than 5,800 violations it said were committed against women in Yemen over nine years, including killings, injuries, abductions, enforced disappearance, torture, in addition to dismissal from jobs and forced recruitment.

According to the report, the network's field team documented approximately 5,834 violations against women during the period from January 2017 to the end of 2025, in a number of Yemeni governorates, including Al-Hodeidah, Al-Dhale'e, Taiz, Hajjah, Dhamar, Lahj, Marib, Rima, Shabwa, Ibb, Sana'a, Al-Bayda, Al-Jawf, Saada, and Amran.

In the same context, reports issued by the American Center for Justice indicated that Yemeni women face a continuous path of restrictions and violations, considering that arbitrary arrests and politically motivated trials have become among the tools used to pressure women since the Houthis took control of the capital Sana'a in September 2014 .

The case of Laila Al-Maqtari has reopened debate on the reality of women within security institutions in Yemen, amid rights-based calls to ensure women's protection, enhance oversight and accountability mechanisms, and prevent impunity in cases of violations .
