Vigil in Makhmour: We demand the physical freedom of our leader

The vigil that started in the Makhmour Martyr Rustem Cudi Camp (Makhmour Refugee Camp) to demand the physical freedom of Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan has continued for 266 days.

Makhmour- Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan has been held in an aggravated isolation in Imrali Prison for 25 years and no information has been received from him since March 25, 2021; his lawyers and family members have been allowed to see him under the pretext of disciplinary punishments. Many protests have been held across Kurdistan and in many countries, demanding his physical freedom.

A vigil was started in the Makhmour Martyr Rustem Cudi Camp (Makhmour Refugee Camp) on July 20, 2023 to demand the physical freedom of Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan. NuJINHA spoke to young women, who are determined to demand the physical freedom of Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan.

‘Our aim is to ensure his physical freedom’

“The vigil in the Makhmour camp that has been going on for eight months aims to ensure the physical freedom of leader Apo (Abdullah Öcalan),” said Nalin Gökalp. “As young women and men, we have joined the vigil to receive information about leader Apo. We should struggle for his freedom because his thoughts and philosophy bring freedom to us.”

‘Protests have been taking place everywhere for his physical freedom’

Speaking about the protests across Kurdistan and in other countries, Nalin Gökalp said, “Young women and men have been holding various activities for the physical freedom of leader Apo. Protests have been taking place everywhere for his physical freedom. I call on all young people to participate in the protests to ensure his physical freedom.”

‘His thoughts and philosophy have become universal’

Eynas Kar told NuJINHA that they, as young people, would hold protests until they ensure the physical freedom of Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan. “Every Kurd must participate in the protests to demand his physical freedom. The Turkish state has been imposing an aggravated isolation on him. Young women and men should carry out activities everywhere. Not only Kurdish people but also everyone demanding freedom have been holding protests for his physical freedom because his thoughts and philosophy have become universal.”

Eynas Kar also called on all young people to participate in protests and activities to ensure the physical freedom of Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan.
