Treaty on violence against women to expire on July 1
The decree of Turkey’s President Erdoğan announcing Turkey’s withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention was published on Friday in Official Gazette, stating that the Istanbul Convention will expire on July 1, 2021.
News Center- The expiry date of the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence, better known as the Istanbul Convention, was published on Friday in Turkey’s Official Gazette. According to the decision signed by Turkey’s President Erdoğan, the Istanbul Convention will expire on July 1, 2021.
As the number of femicides, violence, harassment and rape against women increases day by day in Turkey, Turkey’s withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention has doubled the cases. Since the announcement of the decision, women have been taking to the streets saying, “We don’t recognize this decision” to protest the decision; they have hung banners on their balconies, over buildings in many cities, particularly in Istanbul, have organized marches issued statements to the press and written statements.
