The Iraqi Women’s League Expresses Solidarity with Kurdish Women and Condemns Violations Against Them

The Iraqi Women’s League condemned grave violations against Kurdish women in Syria, expressing solidarity and urging protection through human rights, rule of law, and solutions.

News Center — The Iraqi Women’s League stated that wars and military operations in Syria have produced serious consequences threatening the security and stability of women. It pointed to incidents in Al-Hasakah, Deir ez-Zor, and Raqqa, where violations included the abuse of the bodies of female fighters and women, describing these acts as a blatant breach of international and humanitarian conventions.

In protest against the violations faced by Kurdish women and girls in Syria, the Iraqi Women’s League issued a statement today, Tuesday, January 27, which read:

“The Arab region is going through a difficult phase, marked by critical turning points and rapid changes, characterized by the entanglement of political and security crises that are not free from the dilemma of external interventions. These developments, along with their regional and international repercussions, have clearly affected social, humanitarian, and economic conditions—especially in countries such as Palestine and Iraq, and then neighboring sisterly Syria—where there has been a decline in all basic services and an increase in living challenges, in addition to the compounded hardships faced by Syrian women in areas of conflict and displacement.”

The statement affirmed that the ongoing wars and military operations in Syria have cast heavy shadows over the country, producing extremely dangerous outcomes that threaten the security and stability of Syrian women, who have become among the most prominent victims of these conflicts. It stressed that what occurred in the cities of Al-Hasakah, Deir ez-Zor, and Raqqa—namely, the grave violations involving the abuse of the bodies of Kurdish female fighters, women, and girls—constitutes a blatant and unacceptable violation of all international and humanitarian conventions, and represents a flagrant breach of the principles of international humanitarian law and human dignity.

The statement further explained that religious and ethnic minority communities are subjected to systematic targeting that deprives them of a sense of protection, safety, and stability. At the same time, children are severely affected by violence and brutal crimes, as well as the resulting psychological and social trauma. This situation calls for urgent intervention to halt these crimes, hold perpetrators accountable, pursue them legally, and cooperate in providing safe and supportive environments. It also emphasized the importance of joint efforts to entrench the principles of equal citizenship, respect for diversity, and the promotion of a culture of coexistence as a source of strength for stable and progressive societies.

The Iraqi Women’s League condemned the events taking place in some Syrian regions and cities, calling for swift action to confront these challenges by strengthening human rights, upholding the rule of law, supporting peaceful solutions, and fostering constructive cooperation among national, regional, and international actors to protect human rights—especially the rights of women and girls—ensure their safety, and invest in their capacities to build homelands that protect women’s rights and preserve human dignity, rather than serving as arenas of destructive conflict. The statement also called for the inclusion of all segments of Syrian society, without discrimination, in spreading the values of justice and equality in order to achieve sustainable peace in a democratic Syria
