Sudan:11 killed in north Darfur markets amid worsening conditions.
UN agencies warned of rapid deterioration in Sudan; 11 killed in North Darfur market drone strike, highlighting escalating conflict severity and catastrophic impact on civilians amid rising humanitarian needs and displacement.
News center-Sudan is experiencing one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises, with civilians facing widespread violations amid escalating conflict, deteriorating living conditions and repeated random attacks causing new wave of displacement.
On Sunday, 16 November, UN agencies warned that the humanitarian situation in Sudan is rapidly deteriorating, with increasing needs and population movements in extremely dangerous conditions.
Jacqueline Wilma Barlevlit, head of the UNHCR sub-office in Port Sudan, explained that civilians live in despair while attempting to flee. Many remain in Al-Fashir, while others try to move but are blocked due to risks, possible return to Al-Fashir, or because they belong to vulnerable groups, such as people with disabilities.
The World Health Organization issued a warning about the worsening hunger crisis and the spread of cholera in Sudan, which has caused over 3,500 deaths. The WHO spokesperson confirmed that Sudan is facing one of the world’s most severe food crises, with more than 21 million people experiencing high levels of acute food insecurity as of September, highlighting the escalating humanitarian disaster.
Famine has already become a reality in Al-Fashir and Kadugli, threatening twenty additional areas in the Greater Darfur and Greater Kordofan regions. The crisis is exacerbated not only by food shortages and disease outbreaks but also by unexploded ordnance and ongoing fighting, according to the UN Mine Action Service.
A UN Mine Action official noted that in urban areas where fighting is intense and unexploded mines and ordnance are prevalent, the situation becomes increasingly dangerous for civilians trapped in an environment that turns deadly with every step.
11 Dead in Drone Strike on Darfur Market
On the ground, 11 civilians were killed and 18 others injured by a drone strike targeting the Takru mine market, located on the border between North Darfur state and the Darfur region, about 350 kilometers northeast of Malha in North Darfur. The market is frequented by thousands of artisanal miners from across Sudan.
A medical source in North Darfur stated that the injured were taken to the Ain Basaru health center for first aid. Due to the absence of a general practitioner, the center is operated only by an assistant. Critically injured patients are being arranged for transfer to better-equipped facilities, approximately 190 kilometers away.
An eyewitness reported that the mine previously had no military presence, but after the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) took control of Malha, they expelled government employees and imposed administrative fees. Movement of military vehicles to and from the mine directly led to the market being targeted.
The Takru mine is one of North Darfur’s main artisanal mining sites, second only to Jebel Amer in significance. Officially announced in 2015, it has since become a major source of state revenue due to its economic importance.
Since April 2023, Sudan has witnessed conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF, causing thousands of civilian casualties, mass displacement, and the spread of diseases, epidemics, and famine.
