Star Conference: The Genocidal Attack on Rojava Is Being Carried Out with International Approval

The Kurdish people and Rojava have a long history of resisting and confronting extremism and armed groups—especially those that fear women.

News Center — Rojava has represented a troubling model for regional and international powers because it eliminated some of the most dangerous extremist organizations, sheltered displaced people who suffered immensely from ISIS attacks, and achieved numerous victories on both local and global levels.

In a statement addressed to public opinion on Thursday, January 22, Star Conference condemned the genocidal attack on Rojava, affirming that it is being carried out with international approval. The statement noted that, “Under Erdoğan’s plans, the groups known as ‘al-Amshat,’ ‘al-Hamzat,’ ‘Sultan Murad,’ and ‘Nour al-Din al-Zenki,’ which are closely linked to the Turkish state, launched a brutal attack on Kobani in 2014 under the name of ISIS. Thanks to unparalleled resistance, the city of Kobani was liberated from these groups on January 26, 2014.”

The statement emphasized that the same mercenaries of the Turkish occupation are once again attacking the city of Kobani as part of their assaults on Rojava, in an attempt to repeat history. “Electricity, water, and internet services have been cut off from Kobani, which is an indication of preparations for a major attack, and efforts are underway to prevent information from reaching public opinion.” It stressed that the resistance launched with a unified spirit must continue with the same strength, noting that “the mercenaries of the Turkish occupation do not abide by the ceasefire and continue their attacks, and the siege imposed on Kobani forms the basis for a major offensive.”

Star Conference also stated that there is a genocidal attack on the city of Hasakah, where armed groups are seeking to annihilate the people there. In the Ghuwayran neighborhood, where two prisons hold around six thousand ISIS members, jihadists from Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham are attempting to open the prison doors and release them, according to threats they issue daily through the media. On the ground, it is evident that they have completed all their military preparations to that end.

The statement warned that the release of ISIS detainees from these prisons “would be a great catastrophe for the residents of Hasakah and all other peoples, as all those held in these prisons are high-ranking ISIS members and loyalists.”

It further noted that “the international community seems to forget that in 2014, fighters of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) and Women’s Protection Units (YPJ) rescued Christians who were besieged inside a church. Today, however, the people of Rojava are facing a major genocide, and the local residents of Hasakah are exposed to the danger of physical and cultural annihilation. If ISIS is released from these prisons, no one will escape the consequences.”

The conference held international powers responsible for this situation from the very beginning, stating that “even in these hours in which a ceasefire is allegedly in place, these attacks continue relentlessly.” In response, it appealed urgently to all humanity, world institutions and organizations, and Kurdistan, warning that “if we do not raise our voices today, these flames will consume everyone.”

The statement affirmed that these attacks on the people have so far resulted in the targeting of civilians, the looting of their homes, and the theft of their resources. It also stated that armed groups operating under the mentality of the Turkish state subject captured women to inhumane treatment.

Star Conference strongly condemned the attacks against women, stating that “the women who have fallen into the hands of armed groups, and the treatment they receive, once again demonstrate the necessity of uniting in resistance with all our strength, to avenge these resistant women. History has witnessed the resistance of the Women’s Protection Units against extremists who drive humanity toward destruction.”

The statement concluded that armed groups are attacking the region with the support of international powers, adding that “through the images that have been circulated, they have exposed their cowardice and weakness. But everyone should know that the spirit of vengeance will never leave women. Through these acts, it is clear that the attack aims to violate the dignity of all women. Therefore, let us unite our forces, and let Rojava be the end of armed groups. Today is the day to unite our hearts and minds—for every woman and every child forced onto the path of displacement, compelled to face a harsh life amid cold and darkness. Let us unite our strength against demographic change and against physical and cultural genocide
