Qamishlo (Qamishli)- Armed groups backed by the Syrian interim government have carried out attacks in various parts of Syria every day. People from different ethnic and religious groups in Syria are at risk of being targeted by these groups.

The recent attacks on the Druze majority city of Sweida reveal what kind of Syria is aimed to be built by the interim government. Despite the ongoing attacks, the women of Sweida have taken to the streets in order to make their voice heard all over the world.

Brutal massacres

In an interview with NuJINHA, Ebir Hasaf, member of the Women’s Council of North and East Syria, spoke about the rights violations in Syria against ethnic and religious identities in Syria since the establishment of the Syrian interim government led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS)

“Following the fall of the Baathist regime, the Syrian people were hopeful,” said Ebir Hasaf.  “However, the Syrian interim government has exercised power over people, committing rights violations against Syrian people. Therefore, there is no difference between the government and the Baathist regime. It carried out brutal attacks on the Alawite community in Syria’s coastal areas.”

Abir Hasaf also spoke about the recent attacks and rights violations in Sweida. “The recent developments in Sweida are very concerning. The Syrian people have been fighting each other and Sweida is out of control. The tribes backed by HTS have been committing brutal massacres against the Druze people, women and children.”

‘Old women have taken up arms to protect their families’

Abir Hasaf pointed to the efforts of the women in Sweida to protect themselves and their homeland and said, “The women of Sweida have made great efforts to protect themselves. Even old women have taken up arms to protect their families and villages. We call on all Syrian women to unite and struggle for their rights and to build a democratic Syria.”
