Hesekê (Hasakah)- People living in the areas controlled by the Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and other armed groups face rights violations, including killing, kidnapping, violence and torture. These armed groups also attack holy sites; many videos showing how holy sites are destroyed by these groups published on social media platforms.
In an interview with NuJINHA, Amani Al-Gharbi, Spokesperson of the Future Syria Party Women’s Council in Hasakah, commented on the recent developments in Syria.
‘The HTS causes fear among people’
The Assad regime, which was in power for more than 50 years, implemented many methods of oppression against the people of Syria, said Amani Al-Gharbi. “The fall of the Assad regime is considered a very important development for the future of Syria. However, the takeover of the HTS causes fear among people. We hope to have a new Syria, where the rights of all people are guaranteed and the role of women in decision-making positions is strengthened because women paid the heaviest price of the Syrian crisis. The methods implemented and decisions made by the HTS are against the wishes of the Syrian people.”
‘Women must protect their gains’
Amani Al-Gharbi pointed to the role played by women in the revolution in Rojava and said, “Women must protect their gains achieved in the revolution. They must play their leadership roles in all facets of life. Syrian women must take the resistance of women in North and East Syria as a role model. As the Future Syria Party, we aim to build a democratic, pluralistic, decentralized Syria, where the rights of all people from different ethnic and religious groups, especially women, can participate in decision-making positions in the new Syria. The new Syrian constitution must guarantee the rights of all people from different ethnic and religious groups.”
Speaking about the practices of the HTS, she said, “There is no difference between its practices and the previous regime’s practices. The people of Syria will not accept this.”
“Women are primarily responsible for their families, husbands, and priorities,” Aisha al-Dibs, head of the Women’s Affairs Office in Syria, said in a post on social media platform X in December 2024.
“We condemn her statements. Women in northeastern Syria have achieved great successes in all facets of life, especially military. In the region, women still enjoy their rights. As women of North and East Syria, we struggle for freedom everywhere against slavery. Women’s movements and organizations keep raising their voices against the mindset of the HTS.”
