Qamishlo- Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan, also known as Apo, shows a way to overcome all crises in Kurdistan, in the Middle East and the world by making the “Call for Peace and Democratic Society” on February 27, 2025.

‘Stability and peace for the Middle East’

The historic call of Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan is an important step to build democracy and lasting peace, Şiraz Hemo, coordinating member of Kongra Star, told NuJINHA. “Leader Apo’s call for peace and democratic society was a requirement for all people living here. Leader Apo always thinks about a solution for people from all nations in the region to live together. His thoughts can eliminate the systems imposed on societies. If these systems continue, peace and tranquility will never be built. The call of leader Apo has two perspectives: The elimination of the reasons for the war and racist, religious and sexist concepts that exist in the region. These concepts affect societies and lead them into a genocide. Therefore, a solution must be found for this situation.”

The philosophy put forward by Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan is for both liberal societies and democratic forces and is practically applied in practice, Şîraz Hemo said, “This call will have a major impact on the region and the Middle East on both counts. In order to ensure stability and build peace, a structure based on a Democratic Society should be built. Therefore, everyone should welcome this call.”

‘The Turkish state has not taken a step yet’

Şîraz Hemo thinks that the call of Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan is an opportunity for peace and that the Turkish state should miss this opportunity. “We have been witnessing how the systems built by nation-states have been collapsing. The situation in Syria and the conflict between Israel and Iraq show how the expiration date of these systems is approaching. Although leader Apo has already made the call for peace and democratic society, the Turkish state has not taken a step yet for peace because it wants to extend its life. Both parties must make efforts for peace.”

‘We demand freedom for leader Apo’

Şîraz Hemo pointed to the importance of Abdullah Öcalan's physical freedom and women's struggle for freedom and said, “Steps must be taken for the physical freedom of leader Apo. The call of leader Apo will serve everyone who demands a free and democratic life with dignity. We will keep struggling for his physical freedom. We must take more actions for the freedom of leader Apo. The ‘I want to visit Abdullah Öcalan’ campaign means that we demand freedom for our leader.”
