As-Sweida — Participants in the protest held in the Syrian city of Sweida renewed their accusations against the Syrian interim government of pursuing a policy of arbitrary and retaliatory arrest against civilians without bringing clear charges against them.
The mothers of those kidnapped and forcibly disappeared resumed their protest in Karama Square today, Wednesday, April 15, after a pause of more than nine months, amid ongoing demands to know the fate of their sons and their immediate release.
The square witnessed the presence of mothers and families of the missing from various villages, in an attempt to pressure the guarantor states to assume their humanitarian and legal responsibilities and work to resolve this unresolved humanitarian file. The participants affirmed that the Syrian interim government has pursued a policy of retaliation against civilians, who were arrested from their homes without any charges, and they are defenseless.
"A bleeding wound in every home"
On the sidelines of the vigil, Lamees Mounzer from the organization "My Home is Your Home" said that the initiative launched during the vigil aims to display pictures of the missing persons who have been documented, noting that more than 125 missing persons from Sweida have been documented, including at least one child and 29 elderly people. "Forced disappearance is a crime against humanity, and it is a bleeding wound in every home."
She demanded the disclosure of the fate of all missing persons and the release of detainees, affirming that vigils will continue periodically and that weekly activities will be organized in cooperation with the "Sabaya Sand" team in Shahba.
"We do not know the charge against him"
For her part, Nadia Saray al-Din affirmed that her son, a content creator, was in Lebanon and was arrested in the Al-Matuna area while returning from Lebanon to Syria, following the massacres of July 2025. She indicated that he only has his camera and works on producing his own content to help people and provide humanitarian aid.
She said that she still does not know the charge against him, and it has been one month and ten days since his arrest, wishing for his safe return along with all the abductees. "The wave of abduction was not limited to the period of the invasion but extended beyond it and has continued up to this period."
"We will continue our movement"
Walaa Taj al-Din, an official of the World Druze Organization, indicated that the vigil comes in support of the families of civilian detainees, affirming that the arrests are arbitrary and illegal, and that participants will continue their actions until the release of all detainees without exception.
"We demand disclosure of the fate of the abductees"
In turn, Nadia Mahmoud said that her brother was forcibly disappeared on July 15 during the events that Sweida witnessed. He is the breadwinner for his family and has three children, pointing out the great burdens resulting from his absence. She appealed to humanitarian organizations, the International Red Cross, and all countries of the world to intervene and disclose the fate of the abductees and return them to their families.
"Arrest has increased the suffering of families"
Raeda al-Dhaher also expressed her solidarity with all mothers, despite not having children of her own, affirming that she has relatives who were kidnapped from the streets of their city without any fault while returning to their homes. She demanded the opening of all prisons and the disclosure of the fate of the disappeared, affirming that their absence for nine months without any contact increases the suffering of families.
"We await his return"
In the same context, Nagham al-Harfoush said that her brother has been missing since July 2025. He is a civilian with no issues against him, indicating that his family, especially his children, await his return. She called on the guarantor states to disclose their fate and return them safely.
