Yemen - Yemeni Southern Movement (al-Hirak) announced that they have appointed Zaina Al-gallabi, a feminist and human rights defender and engineer, as the official spokesperson of the Southern Separatist Movement. The appointment is a revolutionary and courageous step for Yemen.

Southern Movement, the head of the Southern Movement announced that appointment of Zaina Al-gallabi with the following words; “As the central committee of the Southern Movement, we appoint engineer Zaina Al-gallabi as the official spokesperson of the movement.”

Zaina Al-gallabi: I am very happy

Zaina Al-gallabi is known as a young feminist and human rights defender in Yemen. She spoke to our news agency JINHA about her appointment. “First of all, I am very happy to break ground in my country. I will be honored to work as the spokesperson,” she said.

“Women’s participation in decision-making is important”

The role of women in Yemeni politics is very limited; Zaina Al-gallabi said that she hopes this perception to be changed with her appointment. She also stated that she is happy to serve as a model for increasing women’s participation in political parties and non-governmental organizations. I believe that women's participation particularly in decision-making mechanisms will change a lot. Women’s participation in decision-making is important. Women should definitely participate in the political processes.”
