Yazidis get excited for Iraq’s upcoming elections

On October 10, Kurds, Arabs, Turkmens, Shiites, Christians, Muslims and Yazidis will cast their votes to determine the fate of their country. 83 ballot boxes have been already placed in 18 provinces of Iraq for the upcoming parliamentary elections. These elections will be different for Yazidis because “Voting is important for the Yazidi community for the first time.”

Shengal– Parliamentary elections will be held in Iraq on October 10, 2021. A total of 24 million people will cast their votes in 18 provinces and Kurdistan Region. 3,247 candidates, including 21 coalitions, independent candidates and political parties, are competing in the upcoming elections. People of Shengal have carried out an electoral campaign for Yazidi candidates and they are very excited about the elections. 

For the first time, Yazidis care about having a representative in the Iraqi Parliament

Sêvê Emo, Co-chair of the Autonomous Administration in Shengal, told us that Yazidis care about having a representative in the Iraqi Parliament for the first time, “We care about these elections because we want to be represented by a Yazidi in the parliament. We carry out an electoral campaign for Semir Şêx Derwêş, the candidate of PADÊ (Êzidî Freedom and Democracy Party). We work non-stop even though we have only several days.”

Young women call on Yazidis to vote

Sara Şengali, a member of the Êzidî Youth Union Coordination, also commented on the upcoming elections and said, “The will of the Yazidi community, women and youth should be visible in the parliament. All people of Shengal should cast their votes on October 10.”
