Political Researcher: Gaza Pays the Price of a Political Decision Without Popular Mandate
Journalist Guevara Taha says the October 7 attack was a catastrophic turning point for Gaza, its repercussions exceeding declared objectives, causing widespread destruction, displacement and fears of more land seizures.
Palestine – The Hamas movement waged the October 7 attack according to an equation that only it understands, heedless of material and human losses alike, granting itself a mandate from the residents of the Strip, which has today resulted in a miserable situation for the city and its inhabitants, and a continuous threat of displacement with the reoccupation of the city to steal all its lands and history.
Journalist and researcher in political affairs Guevara Taha says that the decision of October 7 came from higher organizations, but the implementation was in the hands of the Hamas movement, especially since anyone looking at the matter realizes fully that it was with planning, arrangement, tight organization, and control over every step that took place that day — everything was calculated precisely. She noted that the attack was a political decision whose repercussions on Gaza city were ominous, especially on the civilian population who faced the horrors of war alone.
She confirms that the October 7 decision is an international political one, implemented through individuals of the Hamas movement, as a prelude to implementing a larger plan set by both Israel and America toward Palestine and the Gaza Strip in particular, given the wealth it enjoys, starting from its geographical location to its natural gas fields. She noted that Hamas expected the Israeli reaction and the great destruction, especially after it was published that 4,000 Hamas elements were eliminated and another 2,000 elements remain who will be eliminated through assassinations in the coming period.
Also, the choice of October 7 as a date was not absurd, according to Guevara Taha, but was preceded by one day by the anniversary of the founding of the Islamic Jihad movement, where the military wing of the faction conducted a display in the middle of the city broadcast on television, and dozens were filmed who were on a date with storming the Palestinian territories on the morning of the next day, so identifying them became an easy matter, as was the case with the launch of a large number of rockets toward Israeli settlements.
"It Did Not Take a Mandate from the Palestinians"
It turns out that not only the Gaza Strip is run by major international bodies and organizations, but Arab countries and the Middle East as well, which move according to tight plans. She added that the Hamas movement had two options to preserve some figures who might not be from the movement only: either internal fighting or entering a major war like October 7. The matter began with an attack, then intensive media coverage and evacuation of border areas — indeed, thousands of kilometers of land between "Israel" and "Gaza."
She adds that the Hamas movement, before carrying out that attack, did not take a mandate from anyone, especially the Palestinians who woke up to a great catastrophe. It also did not provide them with shelter to protect themselves from bombardment inside it, as all the tunnels the movement built in the Strip were used for combat purposes, while civilians were left to have their homes bombed over their heads, especially those who found no other place to shelter them and were driven by helplessness to remain in their homes.
She explains that from a legal standpoint, the mandate of the Hamas movement in the Gaza Strip is not legal, nor is the rule of President Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank. Both of their terms began in 2006 and ended in 2010. She stressed that after that year, comprehensive legislative and presidential elections should have been held to hand over the rule of the Strip and the West Bank to a legal, legitimate body that governs them according to Palestinian law. Consequently, the movement has no right to launch an attack with the horror of the October 7 attack and implicate the Palestinians.
"It Did Not Achieve Any Political Objective"
Guevara Taha stresses that there is a difference between the resistance fighter, which is a correct political-military idea, and the military person whose function is to protect the people of his country internally, and the citizen who is supposed to be protected by both parties. She noted that "Hamas, through the attack, did not achieve any political objective. It will not recover a single inch of the Palestinian lands that were occupied. Rather, more lands have been controlled and stolen, especially since the pretexts now exist strongly. Instead of us pleading to protect the lands of the West Bank today, we are appealing to protect the lands of the Strip from settlement."
Guevara Taha notes that the objectives of the October 7 attack have indeed been achieved: today there are more victims and more destruction, the number of Palestinian dead is continuously increasing, and a wide geographical area is completely empty of its original inhabitants. She added that there is a rise in the number of orphans and persons with disabilities, and pressure to destroy all aspects of life in the Strip, as a prelude to moving to the Middle East.
