Yemen - While the number of detained women in Yemen has been increasing, women are arrested because of their political views, particularly in the areas controlled by the Houthis. Journalist and human rights activist Amatullah al-Hammadi was detained in the city of Marib by security forces and then sent to prison. Some local newspapers claim that she was arrested by the order of the parliament but there is no document proving this claim. After the arrest of Amatullah al-Hammadi, many human rights activists reacted to her arrest.

“She has been held in the worst prison of Yemen”

Yemen’s Abductees' Mothers Association emphasized that Amatullah al-Hammadi was unlawfully held in custody for two days without any legal process “Amatullah al-Hammadi must be immediately released.”

Lina Al-Hassani, the president of the Adalah for Rights and Freedoms, also reacted to the arrest of Amatullah al-Hammadi. “There is no accusation against her. The security officials in Marib are responsible for her psychological and physical safety. Amatullah al-Hammadi has been held in the worst prison of Yemen.”

“Laws are being violated”

Noora Al-Jarawi, President of the Women’s Coalition for Peace in Yemen, condemned the arrest of Amatullah al-Hammadi. “This is not the first case that occurred in the areas controlled by the Houthis. Amatullah is an activist needing special treatment. Despite that, she has been held in prison. All Yemeni parties are violating the rights of women. Amatullah should be immediately released.”
