Hesekê – In July, a 13-year-old girl named İda El-Hemud El-Sedo was killed by her father, brother, and cousin in the Hesekê (Al-Hasakah) city of NE Syria. A video showing how she was killed was shared on social media and sparked anger among women and women’s organizations.
Women organized marches to protest the murder of the girl. The Kongreya Star office in Hesekê also organized a march and said, “We will not the murderers to walk freely.” After the investigation launched into the murder was completed, a murder case was opened against the girl’s father, brother, and cousin. The first hearing of the murder case was held yesterday. Members of the Internal Security Forces (Asayish), Women’s Security Forces, and the Kongreya Star Coordination in Hesekê attended the hearing. We spoke to Evin Paşo, a member of the Kongreya Star Coordination in Hesekê, about the murder case.
4 people were arrested
Stating that one of the aims of the revolution in NE Syria is to end the patriarchal mentality that has become widespread in society and to prevent femicide, Evin Paşo said, “The main issue of the Middle East is women’s issue. If we don’t solve the problems faced by women, other problems will also remain unsolved.” Talking about the murder of İda El-Hemud El-Sedo, she said, “İda El-Hemud El-Sedo was brutally killed by her family. Her family tried to force her into marriage. The members of the Internal Security Forces (Asayish) and Women’s Security Forces launched an investigation to arrest the criminals. As Kongreya Star Coordination in Hesekê, we have the right to defend women's rights. For this reason, we applied to the court to be a party to the murder case. As a result of the investigation, four people were arrested. But many people, who were involved in the murder, haven’t been arrested yet. The brother, who killed İda, the person who encouraged him, her uncle and a person, who watched the incident are in prison now.”
Stating that they, as the members of the Kongreya Star Coordination in Hesekê, attended the first hearing of the murder case, Evin Paşo said, “Two brothers of İda are very young. In their defense, they claimed that they don’t see their sister as “honor” of their family. And they accused their older brother. The older brother and his lawyer tried to justify the murder of İda under the name of “honor”. We, as Kongra Star, criticized that. This case will last long.”
Murder case becomes a global case
Indicating that the murder case of İda has become a global case, Evin Paşo said, “For us, as an organization advocating for women's rights, the method of murder and the shared video is an attack on the achievements of the women's revolution in NE Syria. Men and women, who think they have the right to kill a human being should not forget that one day they will be punished. We will keep struggling until justice is delivered. We will keep defending women.”
