Women of Shahrizor begin to harvest walnuts, they say they like harvesting walnuts despite its difficulties.

Shahrizor- The women of Shshrizor begin to harvest walnuts every year in the autumn. NuJINHA spoke to some of the women harvesting walnuts in Shahrizor, a region part of the Kurdistan Region.

One of these women, Qadri Fatah stated that she likes harvesting walnuts despite its difficulties. “When we climb the trees to shake the mature walnuts, we risk our life because the trees are surrounded by valleys and rivers. We harvest walnuts and pomegranates once a year. We like harvesting them despite its difficulties,” she told us.

“Women have an important role”

Mother of one, Mîhraban Mihemed also harvests walnuts. She is also a member of the women’s cooperative in the region. “Women have an important role in harvesting walnuts,” she said.

Bahar Salih harvests walnuts with her family. She told us that they have to wake up early to harvest walnuts. They only rest during lunch time. Walnuts, one of the fruits of autumn season, have many benefits since they contain a lot of polyunsaturated fatty acids, which are healthier than saturated fats. They improve memory, strengthen the immune system and help build resistance for insulin.
