Deir ez-Zor- Agriculture is the main source of living for the people living in the villages of Deir ez-Zor, the largest city in eastern Syria. This year, the women of the city grew cauliflower and cabbage after learning new methods of crop production.
The cultivation of cauliflower and cabbage makes a significant contribution to the development of the region's agriculture and economy. In an arid region like Deir ez-Zor, growing vegetables like cauliflower and cabbage despite the cutting off water of the Euphrates River and attacks on the region is a success story.
“I have been a farmer for 40 years. Before, we grew wheat, oats, and cotton. But this year, we grew cauliflower and cabbage. Cauliflower and cabbage require consistently moist soil. We had a productive year by overcoming all physical difficulties such as drought and cutting off water of the Euphrates River. We shared the products with the people in need. In order for vegetable growing to become a permanent culture in the region, people should be supported,” Hesna El-Hişaş, a farmer in Deir ez-Zor, told JINHA.
People were encouraged to plant vegetables
Agriculture plays a crucial role in the world economy to fight poverty and unemployment. Therefore, agriculture is a must for the development of countries. For this reason, the Committee for Agriculture supported the villagers of Deir ez-Zor to grow vegetables. And they encouraged the people living in the Hajin city by supporting their project to grow cauliflower and cabbage.
Agricultural development projects
Nada El-Nimir, a member of the Committee for Agriculture in Hajin, noted that women farmers should be supported.
“Our region is known for being an agricultural region. Many women make a living from agriculture. In this context, agricultural development projects should be supported. We have worked coordinately with farmers to develop and expand agricultural development projects. We give fertilizers, seeds, pesticides, and agricultural tools to our farmers in order to support them,” Nada El-Nimir said.
New projects
Stating that they will continue to support the farmers, Nada El-Nimir said, “We are working on another agricultural project now. Despite all difficulties and obstacles, we keep working to develop agriculture and meet the needs of the region. One of our projects is the planting potatoes project. We aim to implement new projects this summer.”
