Yemen – The seven-year-old conflicts in Yemen have caused economic crisis and poverty. An estimated 80 percent of the population of the country requires some form of humanitarian or protection assistance, according to the UN. “What is going on now is indescribable. Many of my projects for women are in a very bad situation due to the economic crisis. Many projects have been completely stopped as the production has been decreasing,” said Naha Al-Khidr, the president of Aden Advertising Office.
“A solution for the economic crisis should be found”
“I have been carrying out a project about baking Kilor (a kind of cake) and I earn a livelihood for my family in this way,” said Walaa Ahmed, whose project name is “Halula Cake”. Walaa complains about the increasing prices of the products, “The materials of cakes are extremely expensive due to the rising currency value. For instance, the price of 10-kilogram cream was 9.000 Yemeni riyals. But now, it is 28,000 Yemeni riyals.” Walaa calls on the Ministry of Industry and Commerce to find a solution for the economic crisis.
“Our profit rate is falling”
Tahani Al-Khader is the owner of Madeire Photograph Studio, and the prices of their materials are also increasing. “We face many difficulties due to the rising currency value. We cannot do business due to the poverty in the country, our profit rate is falling,” Tahani Al-Khader told NuJINHA.
She closed down her shop due to the economic crisis
“I opened a shop called ‘Ladies Phone’ in 2017. But I had to close down my shop due to the increasing prices of mobile phones and rent cost,” Engineer Kholoud Khaled said.
Nadia Wasil is the owner of “Nado Food” and she prepares foods for the wedding reception but she hasn’t received any orders due to the increasing prices of foods, “The price of a chicken was 18.000 Yemeni riyals but it is now 35.000 Yemeni riyals,” she complained.
Mecid El-Da’arî is an economy reporter in Yemen and she thinks the economic crisis will worsen. “The rapid money meltdown due to the absence of a state, the inability of the government and the central bank to find a solution will cause the economic crisis to worsen in Yemen.”
Mecid El-Da’arî also pointed out that the worsening poverty will increase the domestic violence rate.
