She shaves her hair to save wild goats
Conscientious objector Meral Geylani shaved her hair to protest the hunting of wild goats. “Hair grows, but killed goats will never come back,” she said that an amendment must be made to the constitution for violence against animals.

News Center - Turkish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has announced a tender for the hunting of 45 endangered wild goats. The tender will be held at the ministry’s 6. Regional Directorate Meeting Room in Burdur on June 4 to hunt totally of 45 wild goats in Antalya’s Alanya, Gazipaşa, İbradı, Akseki, Döşemealtı, Kaş, Finike districts and Isparta’s Sütçüler district. After the announcement of the tender, many environmental organizations and NGOs criticized the decision. A petition has been launched on Change.org titled, “Ban hunting”. The Turkish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry previously announced other tenders for the hunting of mountain goats in many cities, particularly in Dersim and Bingöl provinces.

Conscientious objector Meral Geylani settled in the Uludere district of Şırnak province to be in solidarity with the families of the Roboski massacre, which took place and killed 34 villagers after Turkish air forces bombed them. Meral Geydani has shaved her hair to draw attention to the wild goats.

“My hair grows, but killed goats will never come back. 45 mountain goats will be killed by a tender, could I draw attention? Friends, you see this photo but not 45 mountain goats to be killed by a tender,” Merak Geydani wrote in her social media post.

We spoke to Meral Geydani and she told us that she shaved her hair to protest the announcement of the tender to kill 45 wild goats. “234 NGOs has launched a petition titled, “Ban hunting”. I shaved my hair to stop the tender for hunting 45 wild goats. I am vegan and ethically against the exploitation of animals. Animals and nature will continue to be killed as long as we do not remove human beings from being central in capitalism.” Meral Geydani demands an amendment to make to the constitution for violence against animals.
“Hunting must be recognized as a crime”
Animals, women, refugees, and LGBTI+ people have faced the pressure of speciesism in the world, Meral Geydani said, “We should take steps against speciesism. The UK is going to formally recognize animals as sentient beings. An amendment should be made for all kinds of violence and abuse against animals in these lands being a crime, not a fault. Hunting must be recognized as a crime.”
