Hasakah- People keep having village life especially in Mesopotamia. Not preferring city life, villagers work the land in order to survive and flourish.

The women living in the Tell Necla village of HAsakah Canton’s Tell Tamer town play an important role in animal husbandry and agriculture.

As a NuJINHA team, we visited Tell Necla located 10 kilometers east of Tell Tamer. 80 Arab families and a Kurdish family live in the village. Earning a living from animal husbandry and agriculture, the villagers warmly welcomed us. After learning that the women of the village make herbal medicines, we decided to speak to them.

She collect herbs to make medicines

A Kurdish family lives in the village of 81 households. Berivan İsmail, one of the members of the Kurdish family, says they live in the village with Arab families by helping each other. We asked her how she learned to make herbal medicines. “I learned how to make herbal medicines from my mother. My mother used to make herbal medicines to treat us when we got sick. Then, I learned which herb is good for which disease. I go to the mountains to collect herbs to make medicines. I use different herbs for diseases such as chest inflammation and diarrhea.”

‘We have a small vegetable garden this year due to the cutting off the water of the Khabur River’

Asiya Al-Etwa, another woman living in the village, planted tomato, okra, cucumber, eggplant, pepper and radish in her vegetable garden. “Now, we are canning vegetables to consume them in winter. I can vegetables to support my family against the deepening economic crisis. City life is more difficult now; everything is more expensive. This year, we have a smaller vegetable garden because the Turkish state has cut off the water of the Khabur River. We call on the international community to stop the Turkish state from cutting off the water.”
