Idlib – Women of Idlib are subjected to only to physical violence but also to many forms of violence. The rights of women are limited by so-called traditions and customs. The physical, psychological, and social violence against women is at alarming rates in the city. Many women were killed when they said no to violence.
35-year-old Buthaina El-Omer and 23-year-old Safaa El-Qedur were killed by their abusive husbands when they asked for a divorce. We spoke to the women of Idlib, who are subjected to violence.
“There was nobody to support me”
“I had to power to stand anymore. I was subjected to violence every day. I was depressed. There was nobody to support me,” said 22-year-old Lama Hac Husen, who got divorced in the second year of her marriage.
“He treated me like his property”
“My ex-husband didn’t allow me to go out,” 20-year-old Rawaa Al-Aluş said, “he didn’t allow me to work. He was a poor man. He couldn’t afford to meet the needs. He always oppressed me. He treated me like his property.”
Seminars to raise awareness
Sociologist Fatin El-Suweyd told us that domestic violence in Idlib causes women to suffer from physical, psychological, and health problems. “Domestic violence causes health problems. NGOs should hold seminars to raise awareness of the public against domestic violence.”
