Sulaymaniyah – While education is an important issue for societies, families shape children's behaviors, habits, and moral values. Shortly, children’s education starts at home. Stating that the education given by parents is important for children, Sociologist Hediye Eli spoke to NuJINHA about the education of children.

“Children shouldn’t be threatened”

Stating that mothers often say “I will tell your father” to threaten their children when their children misbehave, Hediye Eli said, “Such expressions negatively affect the psychology of children. The mothers send a message to their children. The message tells children that there is another person stronger than them. This causes children not to listen to their mothers. Threatening children with punishment causes psychological problems for children. Making the children be afraid of family members causes children not to talk about their experiences comfortably with their family members. Many children who are currently receiving psychological support say that they love their fathers but cannot explain what they are going through.”

“Don’t create a negative profile”

Hediye Eli suggested to parents. “First, parents must agree. When one of the parents is not present, the other has to take care of the children. When the father is not present, the mother should not create a negative profile in the mind of the children. Parents shouldn’t punish their children but use educational methods.”
