SOOHÊR EL-IDLIBÎ
Idlib – Due to the ongoing attacks on NE Syria, people living in refugee camps try to maintain their lives under difficult conditions. Due to the war, the refugees have difficulty in finding bread in the refugee camps of Idlib. Women, who lost their husbands due to the war and live in camps with their children, have more difficulty in finding bread. Poor families, who cannot meet their basic needs, have a meal per day due to the high prices of bread; a piece of bread is about 5 Turkish liras in the camps. These families mostly eat bulgur or rice.
A team of volunteers
Realizing this situation, the people of Idlib started working to find a solution for families living in the refugee camps. A team of volunteers was formed to solve this problem. The team launched a campaign on January 1 to distribute bread free of charge to families in the camps. The team has distributed free bread to many refugee camps in Idlib.
“We give bread to people in need”
“Many people, including doctors, male and female activists, and charities have participated in the campaign until now. Every day, we buy bread and give them free of charge to people in need. The campaign has been carried out by volunteers, not any political parties. Until now, we have helped 700 families. We give four loaves of bread to big families and two loaves of bread to small families,” 29-year-old Sarah El-Sawaf, a member of the team, told us.
“Families receive little support”
“In the refugee camps, many families need support but they receive little support,” Sarah El-Sawaf said, “For this reason, we try to support poor families living in the refugee camps. Most families have welcomed the campaign.”
“Citizens are afraid of not finding bread”
Sumaya Barhum (40) is from the Blain village of Jabal al-Zawiya but she lives in a refugee camp of Idlib. “After the death of my husband, I have to take care of my children. The prices of bread are very high in the region. I think the citizens are afraid of not finding bread. Now, we face another war, there is an economic war surrounding us. We need support especially in winter.”
Women are pleased with the campaign
Meram EL-Eluş (38) lives in another refugee camp in Idlib. Speaking about the campaign, she said, “It's nice to see this cooperation and social sensitivity. This campaign was started in winter when people suffer from poverty. This campaign has supported many families.”
