Nomads living in Orşe plateau go to milk their animals under military blockage

The entrance to many plateaus of Hakkari’s Yükselova district is prohibited for security reasons. Orşe plateau, which is surrounded by mountains, is one of them. The local people have been prohibited to visit the plateau while nomads have to go to the plateau under the military blockage.

Hakkari - Yüksekova (Gever) is well known for its snowy mountains and green nature but the ban on entering its plateaus is forcing the local people. Berivan (milkmaid) women and nomads go to the Orşe plateau to milk their animals but under military blockage. Most parts of the plateau are closed for visit due to ongoing military operations.

There are depopulated villages in the plateau

Orşe plateau, which attracts the attention of both local and foreign people with its fresh air, water, and colorful flowers, is also home to many different endemic plants. Local people go to the plateau for a picnic in summer while Berivan women go there to milk their animals. Many villages of the plateau were depopulated in the 1990s due to military operations. The villagers now cannot visit their villages due to ongoing military operations and bans.

Local people are allowed to visit only several parts of the plateau

The citizens have to return when they want to visit the plateau. Local people have to take permission to go to some parts of the plateau. Berivan women have to go to milk their animals under the military blockage.
