Benghazi - Libyan women still have roles in Libyan society, despite civil war and male-dominant society.
In the 60s, Libya witnessed an active feminist movement; women struggled against customs and traditions and called for the liberation of women. They participated in many fields such as justice, politics, and the military. But due to the civil war that broke out in the country in 2011; women began to lose their role due to economic crises and the ongoing war in the country.
Women have an active and influential role in the society. Despite all obstacles, women are still advancing in all fields, including social, political, and cultural fields, said Ibtisam Al-Sheikhi, chairperson of the Training and Development Department at the Culture and Information Bureau.
The clever woman can overcome difficulties
“Libyan women have participated in every part of life, and they have an active role through NGOs,” said Nouriya Al-Sharif, an editor of local radio called Benghazi. “Women need to be encouraged, and need more moral and material supports to do their best.”
Jalila Al-Darsi is a trainer specializing in publication design. She said, “Women have a great role in every part of society. Libyan women have also an important role in politics.”
Women are determined
Amal Belhaj also underlined the role of women in Libyan society is very important and said, “Women work for hospitals, service sectors, NGOs, and even for military and political organizations. Without women, there will be no development or success in the society, so they have to overcome difficulties they face due to social customs and traditions.
“Women’s determination, their love for work, and their ability will make a change in society. Many women have shown how they are strong in the peace process.”
