Mosul – The number of disabled children has increased all around the world but this number is more in the Makhmur Refugee Camp from other places in the world. The population in the camp is estimated to be approximately 12,000 and 10% of children are born with various disabilities in the camp. If you are a refugee, you face many difficulties but if you are a refugee with a disability, you face more difficulties. In 2018, a campaign was launched in the camp about the education of disabled children and Hevî Center was founded to provide education to children with disabilities.

The center was founded for children

A group of young teachers carried out a project and founded Hevî Center for disabled children in the camp in 2018. Xurbet Tunç, the director of the Hevî Center, underlined that the center is for children suffering particularly from Down syndrome and autism. “The center was founded on august 20, 2018 by some teachers, psychology students, and healthcare commission. We work to overcome the existing deficiencies. We work for children to be loved and valued by society,” Xurbet Tunç said.

“We can build a world without barriers”

Xurbet Tunç stated that there are 35 children receiving education at the center and that the center is open five days a week, “Our aim is to provide education not only for children but also for their parents. We try to teach the parents how they can approach their children. We hold different courses according to the disabilities of children. We can build a world without barriers. If we can heal the wounds of these children, we will also heal the wounds of society.”
