Algeria: 14 women killed in last four months
In Algeria, all kinds of violence against women are considered a crime but no laws have been implemented in practice. The country has signed many international conventions to prevent femicides and all kinds of discriminations against women since 1979 but 14 women were killed in the country in the first quarter of this year.

Women’s rights only exist on paper
The country’s penal code makes rape a crime punishable, however, it does not define rape nor does it recognize marital rape. It also allows rapists to evade punishment if they marry their victims. As legal regulations protect women, they don’t protect women in practice. Women’s rights only exist on paper in the country.
14 women were killed in the first quarter of this year
In 2020, 54 women were killed in Algeria while the number of femicides was 60 in 2019. The lockdowns imposed in all countries have also affected Algerian women and many factors such as unemployment and the economic crisis heavily affect the country and the country's women. According to the reports of the country’s national press outlets, 14 women were killed just in the first quarter of this year.
