Sara Music School to be opened in Kobanî

Hilala Zêrîn Women’s Cultural Movement members start working to open the “Sara Music School” in Kobanî. “We want to provide an opportunity for young people to realize their dreams. All young women and men can come to the Sara Music School,” says Perwin Salih, one of the teachers of the school.

DILUCAN BOZÎ

Kobanî- Hilala Zêrîn Women’s Cultural Movement was officially founded in 2018 to protect and develop Kurdish culture. The movement has held courses such as folk dance, music, and theatre courses since 2018. The movement is going to open a music school named, “Sara Music School” in Kobanî for young women and men.

Sara Music School awaits young people

Each education term of the Sara Music School will last three years. The students of the school will learn the musical alphabet, music theory, solfeggio, rhythm, dictation, makam, harmony, and the history of the Kurdish music. The students will also take musical instruments lessons such as santur (a hammered dulcimer), kemenche, violin, erbane (frame drum musical instrument), and piano. Young people aged between 14 and 17 can enroll in the school. Three teachers will work for the school.

From Kobanî to Amed

Nurşin and Perwin are two siblings from Kobanî. They had to leave Kobanî when ISIS attacked the city in 2014. Perwin was 13 and Nurşin was 15 years old when they left their hometown. They went to Amed. And they studied western and eastern musical instruments at the Aram Tigran Conservatory of Music in Amed, Northern Kurdistan. The two siblings will be the teachers of the Sara Music School.

Nurşin learned how to play violin and Perwin learned how to play the santur. But the trustee appointed to the Amed (Diyarbakır) Metropolitan Municipality closed down the conservatory. The teachers of the conservatory opened a center to maintain their works. The two siblings continued their music education at that center. In 2019, the siblings returned to Kobanî and began to teach music at the Baqî Xido Culture and Art Center.

“We wanted to make a contribution to music in our hometown”

“We returned to Kobanî. We began to teach violin, santur, and music theory under the umbrella of the Hilala Zêrîn. We wanted to make a contribution to music in our hometown,” Perwin Salih told NuJINHA.

“Young people will realize their dreams”

“The door of the school is open for all children and young people, who love music. Many young people in Kobanê are interested in music, but there is no opportunity for them. So we want to provide an opportunity for young people to realize their dreams. All young women and men can come to the Sara Music School,” Perwin said.
