Mural painter Ayat Xelîl Amûrî: “Benghazi is my homeland but Palestine is my soul”

Mural painter Ayat Xelîl Amûrî paints murals about the culture and sufferings of Palestinians in Libya’s Benghazi city.

Benghazi- the Middle East is the land of women, who know each other’s sufferings and try to heal each other. Mural painter Ayat Xelîl Amûrî paints mural about the culture and sufferings of Palestinians in Libya’s Benghazi city while carrying a Syrian passport in her pocket. She has studied English Literature, “Benghazi is my homeland but Palestine is my soul,” she said.  
“Everyone should remember the footages”
Ayat told us that she is not a racist person and that she is against racism. “I support Palestine because I don’t think the Palestinian cause is about racism and being an Arab woman,” said Ayat, who has joined many protests to support Palestinians in Benghazi. “Everyone should remember the footages showing how Gaza was bombed, how children and women were bombed,” Ayat said she painted murals to show what the Palestinians have faced. 
“We painted murals about what is happening in Palestine”
Ayat talked about the protests organized to support the Palestinians and she told us that not only Palestinians have joined the demonstrations but also a group of young men and women. They also hung the Palestinian flag over the pipelines to protest what is happening in Palestine. “When I walked in the streets, I saw the walls. I decided to paint murals. I and a group of young people began to paint the murals. We painted murals about Palestine, what is happening there.”
