Women protest killing of Nagihan Akarsel in NE Syria

Women took to the streets of Hasakah and Shahba to protest the killing of Nagihan Akarsel and all women, who were killed while fighting for the women’s revolution.

News Center - Women continue to take to the streets to protest the killing of Nagihan Akarsel, feminist journalist, academic, member of Jineology Academy and editor of Jineology magazine, in Sulaymaniyah. In Hasakah and Shahba, women held commemorative ceremonies and took to the streets to express their anger.

A tent protest was started in Hasakah for Nagihan Akarsel. “We promise to take revenge and struggle,” the women chanted. The tent protest ended after the speeches of the members of Kongra Star, Jineology Academy and the Martyrs' Families. People from towns of Hasakah, Waşokani camp, camps in Serêkaniyê (Ras al-Ayn), Tell Tamer, Dirbêsiyê, members of the Military Council and Autonomous Administration institutions visited the tent.

“Women will preserve their values”

Evîn Paşo made a speech on behalf of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria. Underlining that women are targeted because they know the plunder, genocidal and war policies of the patriarchal mentality, Evîn Paşo said, “We call for revenge and unity for our killed comrades such as Zeynep and Nagihan. We will continue to chant the Jin, Jiyan, Azadi slogan from North and East Syria to be heard all around the world. Women will preserve their values by resisting.”

“We will continue to hold protests and actions”

Lîlav Hisên, a coordinating member of Kongra Star in Hasakah, read a joint statement on behalf of women. “We, as Kongra Star, promise to resist and fight like Rêber Öcalan (Leader Öcalan) who gave us freedom. We continue to struggle for his physical freedom. We will continue to hold protests and actions.”

The tent protest ended after women chanted the “Jin, Jiyan, Azadi (Women, Life, Freedom)” slogan.

Women of Afrin and Shahba held a march

Thousands of women of Afrin and Shahba held a march in the Ehdas town of Shahba to condemn the killing of Nagihan Akarsel. The women holding the photographs of Nagihan Akarsel, Jina Mahsa Amini, Zeyneb Saroxan chanted slogans such as, “Jin, Jiyan, Azadi” and “Damn betrayal”. The women began to march from the town center to the park in the town.

After the march, Zelox Bekir, co-chair of the Afrin Canton Assembly, made a speech condemning the killing of Nagihan Akarsel. “The attack on Nagihan Akarsel was an attack on all women struggle for freedom,” she said in her speech.

Zehîda Memo, a member of the Jineology Academy in Afrin-Shahba region, also made a speech. “We, as women of Afrin and Shahba, condemn this massacre,” she said, “Pioneering women are targeted because they spread the ideology and philosophy of Rêber Apo all around the world. The target of the enemy is actually the ideology and philosophy of Rêber Apo. We promise to strengthen the struggle of resisting women.”

Xelat Iliyes, member of the Jineology Academy in Afrin-Shahba region, noted that they will resist all attacks of the male-dominant and patriarchal mentality which fears that the 21st century will be the century of women. She emphasized that they will struggle more to avenge all revolutionary women, who were killed.
