Manbij- Manbij is one of the cities once controlled by ISIS. In the city, the number of polygamy marriages has recently been increasing. The women of Manbij have held awareness-raising activities to end polygamy marriages, which cause many problems for women, particularly their right to inherit. On Sunday (February 13), the Social Affairs and Labor Committee and Zenobia Women Gathering, a women’s organization, held a seminar in the new eastern IDP camp of Manbij, northern Syria, to raise awareness of people against polygamy. More than 340 families have lived in the camp, built on an area of six hectares. Many men and residents of the camp attended the seminar held in coordination with the administration of the camp.

“We will keep fighting polygamy”

At the seminar, Nasren El Ali made a speech on behalf of the Zenobia Women Gathering. Talking about polygamy from its historical origin, Nasren El Ali drew attention to the phenomenon of honor over women’s bodies. Underlining that polygamy is a humiliating phenomenon, she emphasized that they will keep fighting polygamy.”

“Child marriages should be ended”

After the speech of Nasren El Ali, Asma Ramou, spokesperson of the Social Affairs and Labor Committee, made a speech. Stating that citizens living in the camps should put an end to child marriages and polygamy, Asma Ramou reported that they have held four seminars against polygamy in the refugee camps of Manbij until now. “We, as Social Affairs and Labor Committee, will continue to struggle against polygamy and child marriages to the end even if you have to hold more than four seminars. We will also organize training workshops to raise awareness. Everyone should understand that these marriages damage society, particularly women.”
