Amed- Yesterday, people in Turkey flocked to streets in many cities to protest the deepening economic crisis in the country as Turkish Lira collapsed and they called on the government to resign. “We cannot make ends meet,” said the women, who took to the streets in Amed (Diyarbakır).

“I stopped dreaming”

“I am a young woman and I stopped dreaming in Turkey because there is no future for young people. We can no longer tolerate this system and we don’t want to live in this system. Something should be changed. All people should struggle against this crisis and policies. The government has no right to drive us to despair. I think this system should be changed. It is time to raise our voices together. This struggle is now the struggle of all people living in the country,” said Gurbet Baykuşak, a student who joined the protest in Amed.

“People become poorer”

Gönül Özer, the chair of the Republican People's Party (CHP) Diyarbakır office, believes that those who have euros and dollars are not affected by the deepening economic crisis. “Poor people become poorer. People cannot even buy flour or sugar. The situation is not bearable anymore,” she told us.

“The government ignores the reality of the country”

Gönül Özer continued to talk as follows: “Why did the people flock to the streets yesterday? Because they are hungry. The people have nothing to eat. I think the government lives in the wonderland of Alice. It claims that there is no economic crisis in the country. It ignores the reality of the country. They should go out to see the situation of the people. People are hungry and cannot pay bills.”

“We will struggle together”

“MPs of the AKP advise people to ’buy half a kilo of meat per month instead of two kilos’. This is the solution of the government against the economic crisis,” Gönül Özer said, “Their advice means that when people are hungry, this is their problem, not the problem of the government. People cannot make ends meet anymore. As the party, we demand snap elections be held and we will start our electoral campaign on December 4 in Mersin. People shouldn’t lose their hope. We will struggle together. The young people shouldn’t lose hope because we will live in peace soon.”

The protest was held with the motto, “We cannot make ends meet” at Dağkapı Square yesterday by the Amed Labor Democracy Platform.
