In Algeria, many women are left homeless after being abandoned by their husbands, especially after they get older. Movement of Society for Peace (Mouvement de la société pour la paix-MSP) MP Zakia Bougatoucha draws attention to the abandonment of women after the age of 50 and the difficulties they experience and emphasizes that this issue should be investigated.

While experts raise the alarm over the homeless women after being abandoned, Zakia Bougatoucha has submitted a parliamentary inquiry demanding this issue be investigated.
Speaking about the reasons for the spread of this phenomenon, Zakia Bougatoucha stated that the perspective against women and the use of social media cause behavioral deviations in men. “This causes unexpected divorces,” she said and demanded the Ministry of Justice investigate this issue.
“We should confront this phenomenon”
Zakia Bougatoucha also stated that the Family Code of Algeria should be amended and adapted for Algerian society. “Committees should be formed to resolve family conflicts. We need to work collectively with NGOs to raise awareness about this phenomenon. I hope my voice will reach the relevant authorities and play an important role in confronting this phenomenon that destroys the lives of women today.”
